SLO Reflections
SLO Reflection: Generating Inquiry
Generating Inquiry means to me being able to ask a question that you will have enough valid evidence and intrigue to follow through the entire research process. While many people can choose a question or topic like “What is my favorite Restaurant” does not hold any water when it comes to an actual research question since it can be answered in one sentence without any evidence needed to back it up. However a question like “What are the consequences of inept laws when it comes to data privacy” would have to have valid data to back it up and is an actual research question. however the wording “Students will be able to generate and explore genuine lines of inquiry related to writing, language, literacy, and/or rhetoric” seems a bit ambiguous to me especially when they mention “genuine” lines of inquiry. This greatly confused me as to what is and is not “genuine”. I feel that if the word genuine as replaced with thoughtful or something along that line, the slo would be a better feel, but that’s just me. Overall i feel that even though there was some confusion in the beginning regarding what qualifies as “genuine” i think that i was able to mostly understand this slo.
SLO Reflection: Multiple ways of writing
Multiple ways of writing means being able to smoothly integrate visual aides, different languages, and multiple texts in order to create a cohesive text. This student learning outcome is clear to me because I feel that the concept is mostly clear especially after ENC 1101 focused on this SLO heavily. I appreciate that this outcome encourages me to expand my sense of a “traditional essay” and allowed me to expand the resources i have to create a more creative and impactful text. I believe this outcome could improve by either dropping it from ENC 1102 or altering the assignments to take advantage of this SLO. In ENC 1101 multimodality was a core part of our essays and forced us to adapt, but in ENC 1102 we are encouraged to make much more professional college paper where multimodality definitely has a use but i found myself not using it next to none. I used this student learning outcome in MA1 when trying to figure out how to use multiple texts to further develop my texts, but i did not use it much since i chose not to include any pictures and i dont know any different languages. This SLO helped my assignment by giving me the tools in the beginning of the planning phase to visualize what texts i should use and how i should integrate them to create a well structured essay.
SLO Reflection: Information Literacy
Information literacy means to me having the skill to be able to decide which texts to use for their literature. This student learning outcome is clear to me because its mostly straight forward that this student learning outcome relates to understanding what makes a good text and when and where you should use it. I appreciate that this outcome is one of the more basic ones when it comes to understanding also that it is a critical part of writing a paper. I believe this outcome could improve by maybe shortening the description and creating more a clear wording than what is currently here. An example of that which confused me was what it they meant by ethics. I used this student learning outcome in Major Assignment One when i was gathering sources for my paper. This Student Learning Outcome helped my assignment by helping me understand which sources to use and which ones to ignore. This Student Learning Outcome also connects well with the outcome generating inquiry because having a good understanding of what to look for would greatly help the gathering resources phase Overall, this outcome is generally pretty easy to understand and overall nice job writing it.
SLO Reflection: Research Genre Production
Research Genre Production means to me altering your writing or text in order to adapt to the community you are targeting. This student learning outcome is clear to me because It seems straight forward and i had a very real experience of this during my essay. I appreciate that this outcome covered something that i did not believe was even a English topic but now i realize how important it is and how it helped me writing my essay. I believe this outcome could improve by maybe renaming the title, i found the title quite confusing but when i read the description i understood it almost immediately. I used this student learning outcome in MA1. This SLO helped my assignment by in the beginning when i was still trying to decide what my paper would look like i only knew that i wanted to the ad industry and its effect on surveillance. However in the beginning i wanted to write a technical paper for more advanced people in computer science and IT. However i realized that the main people effected are the populous so i completely altered my sources and writing to make it easily accessible to as many people as possible. This SLO connects well with the outcome Multiple ways of writing and Information literacy. Overall, this outcome is pretty good regarding the content and i learned the most new items from this but the title is quite confusing.
SLO Reflection: Contributing Knowledge
Contributing Knowledge means to me the ability to as you guys put it “draw conclusions” from multiple sources and use that in conjunction with other sources to generate an overall conclusion and effectively argue that. This student learning outcome is clear to me because what it is describing is pretty understandable and simple, however once again the title was confusing which i would recommend to change. I appreciate that this outcome specifically talks about a topic that i have struggled with in this and past essays. I could always draw conclusions but melding it with other works to make it cohesive always eluded me. I believe this outcome could improve by decreasing the confusion of the title, I mean “contributing knowledge”? I think something like “Resource Analysis and Combinations with works” (wow that ended up long) would be a maybe better. I used this student learning outcome in MA2. This SLO helped my assignment by helping me make the decision to split my essay into much more manageable chunks than trying to create one long lowing piece which would have cause the reader some confusion. This SLO connects well with the outcome Information Literacy. Overall, this outcome genuinely pretty good just another confusing title for me.
SLO Reflection: Revision
Revision means to me being able to read over your work and make adjustments wether that be to restructure, make it flow better or grammatical errors. This student learning outcome is clear to me because over the course of ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 i got quite familiar with revision and became something i was afraid of to something that i can appreciate. I appreciate that this outcome gets straight to the point in its description and is critical in every piece of writing i will do not just in any ENC classes. I believe this outcome could improve by not changing it, You guys really nailed it with a clear title and a super understandable description, great job. I used this student learning outcome in MA1,MA2,as well as MA3. This SLO helped my assignment by making me think about where i had placed words, what quote i used and why and if it is a good place. This SLO connects well with the outcome Generating Inquiry. Overall, this outcome is really well made and has taught me quite a bit when it came to my own writing style. I just want to take a moment and thank Prof. Ramos for getting me excited about writing again, This has been a great experience and i uncovered that writing need not be painful.
